  • ASPIRE AND ACT tests

The state of Wyoming requires all 9th and 10th graders to take a version of the ACT test designed for younger students. Juniors are required to take the ACT. The ACT is a college readiness indicator exam. A student's ACT score is factored in to calculate any potential Hathaway Scholarship award. It is also used to assess our school and is an important aspect of our Alternative High School Accountability model. Even if a student is not planning to attend college, his or her highest possible ACT score benefits our school and will be important later in life if a student decides to further their education.

The New School Year…

Where did the summer go?  Hard to believe school has started and we are already in October.  The new school year has brought some changes to Black Butte.  We ended last year with 65 students.  We started this school year with 102 students.  Our new students are a nice mix of incoming freshmen and transfer students.

Along with new students, we have the following new staff members:

Jerry Coulson – Math

Jeannie Coulson - Business

Adam Gonzales – Spanish

Jessica Brunett – PE/Health

Brad Cox – Social Studies

Jannette Van Patten - Counselor

Josue Palacios – Instructional Coach

Parents have an important opportunity and duty to meet our new staff by attending Parent/Teacher Conferences on October 8th from 4:00 – 7:00 pm and on October 9th from 8:00 – 11:00.  Communication between schools and families is key to student success.  We invite and encourage all parents to attend and bring their sons or daughters.  The best news of all is snacks will be provided!

One of the strategies to improve our graduation rate is community service and involvement.  We have a student advisory group formed to plan and implement community service and involvement projects. Several opportunities are being planned to allow our students an opportunity to give back to the community and create a connection to our community.
